![]() As a result, some rows would be "stretched" out by the interpolation, others wouldn't. But of the nine original rows, only two would be next to a new row pf pixels, the other seven wouldn't. 16 is a factor of 160, so the interpolated rows could be spaced evenly: one every 10 rows. If Nintendo had decided to stretch the 144 rows of pixels over the 160 rows available on the Advance's screen, they would have had to insert 16 interpolated rows of pixels. But stretching the screen vertically would also have created unsightly visual artefacts in the game. Why did Nintendo choose to stretch the Game Boy display in one direction, and not the other? One reason is that interpolating in one dimension is a lot simpler than doing it in two. Here is pair of pictures from another game, taken on the AGS-101 model of the Advance SP (which has a brighter, backlit screen). Similar interpolations are visible on the left and right sides of the "Y", and elsewhere on the screen. ![]() The average of two dark pixels is also dark, so it is the same colour as the rest of the "A". On the right side of the "A", another column of interpolated pixels has ended up in between the two columns of dark pixels. ![]() These pixels have been averaged out as a medium gray. On the left side of the "A", a column of pixels has been interpolated between the dark pixels of the "A" and the light pixels of the background. Here are some detailed photos of the "AY" from the "1Player" text: If you look closely at the Advance's display with an un-stretched Game Boy game, then a stretched one, it's possible to identify which columns have had their values calculated by this "averaging" interpolation. In this instance, rather than choosing to duplicate one column to fill the empty pixels, you take an average of the values in the columns to the left and the right of each empty pixel, and use this calculated value instead. It's a simple method, but doesn't look that good, because some columns won't be doubled at all, but others will.Īn alternative approach is to use a technique called interpolation. Every two columns of pixels from an old Game Boy game will now need to be "stretched" over three columns of the Advance's screen.īut what values should be assigned to the pixels in these extra third columns? You could double up some of the original columns' pixels, doubling the "width" of all the odd columns, or perhaps the even ones. Instead, Nintendo selected a screen for the Advance that had a resolution that is one and a half times (or 3/2) that of the original Game Boy (160 x 3/2 = 240). It's not always feasible to double the resolution of your screen it's likely that such a resolution wasn't available (or affordable) in a handheld size at the time of the Advance. It would effectively mean that each of the Game Boy's pixels were twice as wide as before. ![]() If the Advance had twice the horizontal resolution of the Game Boy, it would be easy to stretch: each column of pixels could be repeated twice. Horizontally, the image is definitely stretched. Firstly, the stretching isn't done in the vertical direction: Game Boy (and Color) games only used 144 rows of the 160 available on Advance screen, so there'd be black "letterbox" bars at the top and bottom, whether you stretched the image widescreen (with the shoulder buttons) or not. ![]()

In general you basically want to pick your rendering application, which is normally going to be your “end point”, the program you import all your other stuff into for creating your final images. If you like what Terragen can do as far as atmosphere, terrain, and rendering, then no need to worry about Unreal or Unity. The sacrifice is less realistic atmosphere, rendering, lighting, etc., and less powerful displacement capability. This is either because they’re trying to create a real time game (which Terragen doesn’t do), or they want to otherwise explore their terrains in real time. People working with Unreal want to get Terragen content into Unreal. Unreal, Unity, and most game engines are also end points. So it is something of an “end point”, an application into which you import all your assets from other programs and sources, setup a scene with terrain, sky, etc., and then render within Terragen. it’s not a modeler, so anything beyond terrain, sky, and water you pretty much need to bring into it. But it doesn’t create plants and other objects beyond very simple shapes, i.e. Terragen is at its heart a procedural generation system – which is most useful for creating terrain, shading/textures, and clouds – and a renderer purpose-built for rendering large environments (up to planet-sized). working with other applications to achieve a given end result. ![]() But we thought we’d give a short overview of the current recommendation for when to do something in Terragen vs. This is a complex question with no “best” answer as it highly depends on the specific goals of each person. We recently had a user in our forums asking how they should decide which programs to learn and buy to accomplish their scene creation and rendering goals. We’re back with another Support Diaries entry. ![]() ![]() HP shall not be liable for technical or editorial errors or omissions contained herein. While any automated light switch will work on a standard single-switch circuit, not all of them support multi-way circuits. There are even four-way circuits, where there are three switches controlling the same light. For example, there are three-way circuits, with switches on both ends of the room. But it will still need to be capable of handling the peak wattage.įinally, be aware that not all lighting circuits are the same. A switch may be able to handle the ordinary wattage just fine. This is because electric motors have a “peak wattage”, where the wattage spikes when they turn on. ![]() Finally, some light switch timers aren’t suitable for motors. You’ll also need to be aware that most switches don’t support dimmers. But CFL and LED bulbs have different requirements. Any switch can power an older incandescent bulb. But in these higher-wattage situations, you’ll want to check and double-check your features.Īnother important thing to think about is what types of lights or appliances you’re powering. This is useful if you want to shut those outlets off overnight to save phantom power. They can even be used for circuits that control a row of kitchen appliances. However, many people use automated light switch timers for an entire room. If your switch controls a single ceiling light, it’s unlikely that you’re going to have any problems. To begin with, you need to know how many watts your circuit requires. Now that we know what we’re looking at, let’s talk features. Some of them give you the ability to set a timer, and others don’t. They typically offer app control, sometimes motion detection, night lights, and other similar “extras”. We’ve reviewed smart switches in the past, and there are some good ones on the market. Note that this is not the same as a smart switch. This is the type of switch we’re looking at today. With an automated light switch, you can typically set a separate schedule for weekends, or even a 7-day schedule. A single, 24-hour dial only lets you set a single schedule. And much like a mechanical plug-in timer, they allow you to turn your lights on and off on a schedule. ![]() Much like a mechanical bathroom timer, they take the place of a wall light switch. However, there aren’t a lot of other useful applications for them.ĭigital timer switches are simply the next evolution of this technology. They’re often used to control bathroom fans, and also infrared lamps in hotels. Turn a dial, and the switch will activate, typically for anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. Similarly, mechanical bathroom timers have been around for a long time. As the dial turned, the pins would flip the switch on and off. Typically, they worked by inserting sets of pins into a rotating dial. They were particularly popular with frequent travelers, since they could be used to turn a few lamps on and off while you were away. These were timers that could be plugged into a power outlet, and used to power various devices. If you remember the dark, prehistoric decade of the 1990s, (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth) you’ve probably seen mechanical timers. But first, here’s a quick overview of your options, and what you should keep in mind while you’re deciding. We’ll be giving you an in-depth review of three of the top models that money can buy. Whatever your reasons, an automated light switch timer is one solution to this problem. Or maybe you just want the convenience of lights at times when you know you’re going to be home. Maybe you get up at the same time every day and don’t like fumbling in the dark every morning. Maybe you want to deter burglars while you’re out of town. Sometimes, you want a switch in your house to turn on or off automatically. ![]() ![]() ![]() #EPPC23 brings together the Microsoft Power Platform Communities for three days of unrivaled days in-person learning, connections and inspiration, featuring three inspirational keynotes, six expert full-day tutorials, and over eighty-five specialist sessions, with guest speakers including April Dunnam, Dona Sarkar, Ilya Fainberg, Janet Robb, Daniel Laskewitz, Rui Santos, Jens Christian Schrøder, Marco Rocca, and many more.
